You know that moment when you arrive at someone’s front door and it instantly feels like Christmas in the most warm and cozy way? That’s exactly the feeling we wanted to share with this project. ❤️

Think of this DIY as the centerpiece to your wreath or a beautiful standalone accent that welcomes guests with warmth and whimsy. It’s a fresh take on a classic wreath. Using a simple wood plaque, the Victoriana Mould, and gold wax, it turns the ordinary into something that feels truly special.

We used a Hobby Lobby wood plaque for our base, but don’t let that stop you! A thrifted cabinet door or a forgotten decor piece works just as beautifully (basically, anything that’ll hold a hook is fair game!).

So gather your supplies from your local or online stockist, pour yourself something warm, and let’s create a piece that makes your doorway as inviting as the season itself.

Step by Step Guide

STEP ONE: CAST YOUR MOULDS

Pick your favorite moulds and start casting! If you’re working with clay, don’t forget a generous dusting of cornstarch. It makes popping those pieces out a breeze. For resin, measure by volume (not weight) and stir until both parts are fully blended before pouring.

STEP TWO: PLAY WITH YOUR LAYOUT & APPLY YOUR CASTINGS

Once your castings are ready, play around with the layout until it feels just right. We knew we wanted to add a decorative ribbon at the top, so we kept things a little fuller toward the bottom—snipping the end of the rose for extra dimension.

When you’re happy with the placement, glue your castings down (we love using Thick and Quick) and let them set firmly before painting.

If you’re using clay, don’t be afraid to paint while it’s still damp! Just use a soft hand and a fine brush to keep those lovely details intact.

Bonus tip: painting clay while it’s slightly wet helps reduce cracking. Let it rest a bit first so a light “crust” forms, then delve in.

STEP THREE: PAINT YOUR PROJECT

We went with a soft sage green for a vintage-y feel, but you could absolutely go more Christmasy with rich red and gold accents.

Using a fine brush, keep your hand steady and close to the surface as you lightly skim over the raised details with white paint. This gentle touch gives your piece a beautiful vintage finish.

STEP FOUR: PAINT THE LITTLE DETAILS

Lastly, go in with a gloved finger and some gilding wax to accent the berries, bird wings, and yummy rose foliage.

Quick note: We ended up gluing our hook in place. The wood was just a little too soft to hold the screw securely on its own. So, if yours feels the same, a bit of glue will do the trick! Once that’s set, tie on your ribbons and attach everything to your wreath.

The Possibilities Don't Stop at Your Front Door!

If you've been here for a while, you know how much we love multi-purpose home decor. Something that's both functional AND pretty? Well, that just makes our hearts flutter! So we had to share a few lovely ways you could use this wreath hanger in your home. 💕

Nestled in Garland – Whether it's draped along your staircase or gracing your mantel, tucking one or multiple of these smaller plaques into faux garland creates the most enchanting focal points.

Layered on a Wall Display – Create a little holiday vignette on your wall by hanging the plaque alongside vintage frames, small wreaths, or other seasonal decor. The layers and textures make for such a cozy feel.

As Ornament Clusters - Craft several smaller plaques from different wood shapes, then cluster them together with ribbons of varying lengths. Drape the whole grouping on a staircase handrail, in a window, or from a chandelier for a truly beautiful cascading effect.

The beauty of this project is that once you have your castings and your technique down, you can create multiples in an afternoon. Make one for your door, one for your mom, one for your best friend… before you know it, you've created a whole collection of heartfelt, handmade pieces.

We can't wait to see all the charming ways you make this project your own! 💕
