STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO PUT A PAINT INLAY DESIGN ON AN OLD WATERING CAN

STEP 1: Choose a design.

Begin by selecting a design from the IOD Melange Paint Inlay sheets. We choose the sunflower.

STEP 2: Cut out the sunflower design from the Melange Paint Inlay.

STEP 3: Apply white chalk paint to the watering can.

Apply white chalk paint generously to the area where you want to add the design. Ensure the paint is even, but it doesn't have to be perfect.

STEP 4: Arrange the sunflower design on the painted area of the watering can (design side to paint, grid lines facing you).

Place the sunflower onto the painted area of the watering can, starting in the middle and working your way out. Tip: If you spritz the gridded BACKSIDE of the paint inlay prior to application it will be slightly more flexible, which will help you place the inlay on unusual surfaces or curves.

STEP 5: Lightly press the sunflower into the paint and use a spritzer to wet the back of the paint inlay.

Using a damp cloth, gently run it across the design, making sure to get good contact in the ridges and curves of the can. You should avoid using excessive force as it may cause damage to your inlay or smudge the design below. Make sure to wet your inlay just enough so that the entire design is translucent.

STEP 6: Allow the paint inlay to dry completely.

For chalk paint, the paint inlay will be ready to remove when it is dry to the touch and no longer translucent.

STEP 7: Remove the paint inlay.

Once the paint has dried, you can remove the paint inlay. Wet the paint inlay with a spritzer and use a cloth to gently wet the entire surface of the design and wait 30 seconds. The paper should pull back easily, if it does not, you should apply some more water with a damp cloth on the back of the carrier paper.

Carefully pull off the paint inlay and set it aside to dry (when used with chalk paint, paint inlay can be reused several times for lighter impressions).

STEP 8: Wait for the can and sunflower design to dry.

STEP 9: Set your paint inlay prior to sealing.

Set the paint inlay design with a 50% water / 50% clear coat by misting over the entire design.

STEP 10: Add an aged looked with IOD Vintage Textures Stamp and IOD Black Ink.

Use the IOD Vintage Texture stamps to create an aged look. You can start with crackle design from the set. Dab the ink pad on the center of the stamp, but don’t ink the entire stamp (you don’t want harsh edges from the edge). Stamp around the design and back of the can.

Choose a second stamp from the set and repeat. Don’t be afraid to overlap the stamped design. Once you are happy with the design, wait until it has dried.

STEP 11: Seal the final design.

After the stamp ink has dried, you can then add one even coat of clear coat sealant over the entire design to make it water resistant.

Wait for the sealant to dry for the recommended amount of time (check the label of your chosen sealant).

Step 12: Enjoy your new, transformed watering can!
