Neoclassic Wall Art with IOD Moulds
Hi IOD Community! Today, we're working on this gorgeous wall art with a neo-classic vibe that's reminiscent of the Greek Renaissance era. We're using our Persephone Mould as the focal point for this project. We love how her intricate features serve as a solid base for composing a more grand relief in a piece. Follow along with Olivia as she walks us through one of the many ways to incorporate the new Persephone Mould and Arched Wood Gallery Blank into a project.

Step-by-Step Tutorial to Neoclassic Wall Art with IOD Moulds
Step 1 - Paint The Surface
Begin with painting the interior panel of your arched wood board using your black chalk type paint. The wood is porous and it’s easy to get good coverage, so we only needed one coat. Allow to dry.
Step 2 - Prep for Persephone Mould
Next, you’ll want to prep the beautiful Persephone Mould. Follow the directions of the casting resin. Ours called for a 1 to 1 ratio of parts A to B. Something to note—with a larger, deeper mould like this, it will get hot and set quickly. It can be a little surprising the first time! Allow to set completely.
Step 3 - Choose and Apply your Castings
Using your Classic Elements Moulds, make your beaded trim castings until you have enough to go around the middle panel of your arched board. This mould can be fiddly, so use plenty of cornstarch and tap out any excess for easy removal. Glue into place, coaxing the casting gently around the curve. Cut up your beads to fit into the corners for complete coverage.

Step 4 - Stamp your Background Design
Now, stamp your background. We’re using the IOD Mixing White for a crisper appearance, but you can also use your soft white chalk paint. Begin with your large frame from the Veranda stamp, and use a cut-up thin mount (or the backing of your stamp) to give support to maintain the oval shape. Ink up your stamp evenly, and commit! Don’t press so hard that the ink leaks out the sides, just a firm, even pressure all the way around. Next, place the corresponding mask over the top of your frame and begin with your flowers. We took the smaller of the sets and placed them about the edges. Remove the mask.
Step 5 - Paint Persephone
We used an off-white, creamy paint on the Persephone Mould to cover up that resin and match the outside of our frame. Once you're finished, set the Persephone Mould to the side to dry completely.
Step 6 - Apply The Frame Border
Cast enough of the Trimmings 1 Mould leaves to fully go around your frame. An important note—we decided we wanted the castings to be symmetrical rather than maintaining a single line all the way around. This is purely up to you, but it might be a slightly different application if you decide just to run the trimming butted up to one another. For ours, we started the stems at the top and covered the join with the shell from the Classic Elements Mould. Continue downward, gluing as you go.
Step 7 - Apply Persephone to Your Frame
Now to finish your frame. We’re coating the back of the Persephone Mould with a layer of glue and placing her in the center of our frame. It’s important that you use a healthy amount of glue because Persephone is a bit thicker than our other moulds. Next, we’re finishing off our project by painting our moulded details and our frame.
Quick Tip: You have the option to paint your mould details while they are wet or dry. The benefit to painting them once they’ve dried is that you can paint your moulds without losing any detail from damp clay.
Step 8 - Add Texture with Gold Leaf Paint
Lastly, we’re using a gold leaf paint to bring out the gorgeous details in our moulds. You want to make sure your project is completely dry before using your golf leaf paint.
That's it for today! Once the golf leaf paint has completely dried, you're ready to enjoy your neo-classical piece. We can't wait to place her on the wall in our office. Where will you put yours? Let us know in the comments!
