If you’ve caught the stamping bug (we get it—it’s addicting!😉) and can’t get enough of IOD Stamps but need a little step-by-step guide, we’ve got you covered! IOD Stamps have the power to elevate even the roughest thrifted finds into stunning vintage pieces. And home decor? That’s just the beginning! These beauties can be used for food art, crafts, lifestyle projects—you name it.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just getting started, we’ve rounded up five must-know tips to help you make the most of your IOD Stamp stash. Let’s get into it!

Tip #1 - Seasoning IOD Stamps

Did you just receive your first set of IOD stamps? So exciting!! 🎉 But before you delve in, there’s one quick step—conditioning your stamps. Don’t worry, you only need to do this once, and then your stamps are set for life! Let’s get those beauties prepped.

Start by removing the acrylic sheet attached to the stamping side of the design, while leaving the stamps attached to their backing sheet. Using a fine grit sand block scuff or rough up the stamping surface. Lightly sand in one direction and then rotate the craft stamp 90 degrees and sand lightly in a different direction.

This helps the mediums stay put, and not bead (which some types, like ceramics glazes, tend to do). It also will give a cleaner impression.

Tip #2 - When to Remove the Backing on IOD Stamps

TYPOGRAPHY (IOD ALPHA) STAMPS

Any IOD Alpha stamps. Remove the stamp from the backing when ready to use (this takes some force, but don’t worry, the stamps are strong). Arrange the stamps design side down on your project, then lay an acrylic thin mount on top. Press to adhere the stamps to the thin mount and then apply your medium. When you’re done using your letter stamps, clean them and stick them to the backing for storage.

TEXTURE STAMPS

Any stamp that comes as a sheet such as Distressed, Kindest Regards and Cubano: Leave the stamp in one piece on the backing and the backing will work as your mounting surface.

INDIVIDUAL STAMPS WITH MULTIPLE DESIGNS

The majority of our stamps fall into this category, for example, Veranda, Garden Bouquet, Countryside Memoirs, and Charlotte. Leave the stamps on the backing. Cut each design out separately making sure to round the edges of the backing when you cut. The backing will work as your mounting surface.

Tip #3 - IOD Thin Mounts vs. No Mount

Thin Mount

This method is perfect for flat surfaces—think word art on an IOD wood blank or any project where you want your layout just right. Use the grid or curved lines as guides for the lettering layout and for centering your stamps on the project surface. It’s a simple way to keep everything lined up and looking polished!

No Thin Mount

This technique is when you use the stamp without mounting it to anything. You’ll want to use your stamp without a mounting block in a couple of key scenarios:

  1. When you’re working on a curved surface—like a flower pot or wrapping around the corner of a dresser.

  2. When you need the stamp to flex a bit—like when stamping the front of cowboy boots (yes, we’ve done it!), allowing it to conform cleanly to the shape even if the boot is very curved.

Just a little tip, be mindful that your fingers don’t stick to the stamp as you’re applying it. That can cause it to lift and leave behind a surprise smudge you didn’t ask for. A light touch is the best technique here!

Tip #4 - Caring for IOD Stamps

We find that the easiest way to care for and clean stamps is to keep wet wipes nearby, and avoid letting the medium dry all the way on the stamp surface.

Then, when you have time, wash them with mild soap and warm water. For some mediums you may find that you need a stamp cleaner. Use one that is safe for clear stamps. After thoroughly cleaned, place them back on the clear backing for storage

DO NOT use your stamps in high heat applications. This means puh-lease do NOT put them in the dishwasher or leave them in a hot car otherwise they will be more like shrinky-dinks than stamps. (Yikes!)

Tip #5 - Storing IOD Stamps

Say goodbye to the IOD stamp set scavenger hunt! IOD Envelopes are a total game changer when it comes to keeping your stamps tidy and ready to roll when inspiration strikes. No more digging, no more mess—just a clean, creative space that feels as lovely as the projects you’re dreaming up. Trust us, your craft corner is about to become your new favorite hangout. 💕

We even tracked down a super helpful video from our friend Shannon at Pickin’ Boots Vintage to help you visualize exactly how to get your IOD stamps organized! 🙌 Check it out here.

From seasoning your stamps to choosing the right mounting method, and keeping your stash tidy—these simple steps go a long way in helping you get those crisp, satisfying stamp impressions.

Remember, don’t be afraid to play! Try stamping curved surfaces, stamp masking, or even experimenting with new mediums. Grab those stamps, cue up a little crafting playlist, and let your creativity flow. 💕
