IOD Products Needed:

Other Supplies:

  • 1 Thrifted Glass Bowl
  • Glass Cleaner
  • Deep Blue Chalk-Type Paint*
  • Corn Starch
  • Titebond Quick & Thick
  • General Finishes Flat Out Flat Sealer
  • Paint Brush

*we used a chalk-type paint in this tutorial, but there are many brands and types of paint, talk to your stockist to learn which one is right for you!

Step-by-Step Guide:

STEP 1: CLEAN AND PREP YOUR BOWL

Before making any adjustments to the look and feel of your bowl, you’ll want to clean your bowl thoroughly. In this tutorial, we’re using Windex glass cleaner and a paper towel to remove any excess dirt and dust on the glass.

Pro Tip: If you have a price tag or any adhesive on your thrifted find, then you can use Goo Gone and a small scrapping tool to remove it! You’ll want a clean surface before you begin painting your bowl.

Prepare the Surface
STEP 2: PAINT YOUR BOWL

Apply a coat of slate blue chalk-type paint to the bowl using a large paintbrush. You may need to apply multiple coats to achieve full coverage. Let each coat dry before applying the next to ensure a smooth, even finish.

Choose Your Design
STEP 3: PREPARE YOUR MOULD

Grab the romantic IOD Roses mould with its rich detail and dust it with corn starch to help release your casting and prevent sticking. Press IOD Air Dry Clay into your mould cavity, using the micro rim to remove excess clay and create a smooth back for easy application.

Pro Tip: Flip your mould over and tap to remove excess cornstarch from the mould. If you have too much corn starch, then it can impede the detail in your casting.

STEP 4: ARRANGE AND GLUE YOUR CASTING

Arrange your castings on the bowl to plan your layout before you apply your adhesive. In this tutorial, we used the larger floral pieces as anchors and filled in with smaller elements. Once you’re happy with the arrangement, we like to use Titebond Quick & Thick Glue to adhere the castings to the bowl. Press gently but firmly around the edges of your casting to ensure full adhesion, taking care not to distort the air dry clay.

Configure Your Stamping Tools
STEP 5: ALLOW YOUR PROJECT TO DRY

Set the bowl aside and allow the clay to dry completely. This step is crucial to ensure your design stays intact. If there’s ever any large cracking you would like to address, you can always go back in and add a little clay there during the dry time. Check out our Moulds 101 tutorial for more tips and tricks.

STEP 6: APPLY SEALER

Once the clay is dry, seal the entire surface with General Finishes or your sealer of choice. This will protect your design and give the bowl a finished look. Use a brush to apply the sealer, ensuring it reaches all the nooks and crannies of your design.

Set your bowl aside to dry completely and voila! You crafted a budget-friendly thrift flip that gives high-end Anthro vibes. 😍
