Step-by-Step Guide

STEP ONE: CREATE YOUR CASTING

Grab that cornstarch and your IOD Air Dry Clay—it’s time to bring this beauty to life! For our planter, we needed four castings from the larger trim in Trimmings 4.

Give your mould a light dusting of cornstarch (just enough to prevent sticking), then press in a generous amount of clay. Use the micro rim to smooth out the backing, making sure it’s nice and solid. Avoid piecing together small chunks—while it might seem like a shortcut, it can make your casting more fragile and prone to cracking. Repeat the process until you have all four castings ready to go.

STEP TWO: GLUE YOUR CASTINGS

Grab your glue and start securing those gorgeous trims in place! Where the joints meet is totally up to you—we decided to have ours join in the middle and wrap over the side of the planter for a seamless look.

As you position each piece, bring the edges as close together as possible, keeping your lines nice and straight. This will help create that beautiful continual design we’re going for. Repeat around the planter.

If your planter is a different size than ours, it might not line up perfectly, and that’s okay! Just butt your pieces up as best you can and choose one corner as your “cutoff” point where the trim won’t have a seamless wraparound. That’s just the beauty of handmade! It adds to the charm and makes your piece feel authentically crafted.

STEP THREE: PAINT YOUR PROJECT & SEAL

We chose a soft white chalk paint and applied it with an artist brush—nice and gentle to keep all those gorgeous floral details intact. Once your piece is fully coated, let it dry completely before moving on to the next step.

As your piece dries, you might notice the clay shrinking a bit—totally normal! It’s just the nature of the medium. If you see any little gaps where the clay has pulled away, don’t panic! Just take a bit of extra clay, press it into the cracks, and smooth it out. A quick touch-up with paint, and you’re back in business.

Once everything is dry, finish it off with your favorite sealer, and voilà! You’ve just created a stunning planter with a white stone finish.
