Today, we’re delighted to share a heartfelt project that holds special meaning for IOD Artisan Jonathon Marc Mendes—a memory box in honor of his late mother. ❤️Jonathon told us that the idea for this piece had been on his heart for years. He’d tucked away this lovely timber box under his bed for nearly eight years, waiting for the right moment and the right inspiration.

Using soft colors and the La Folie Paint Inlay, Jonathon upcycled this little wooden box into something that holds beautiful memories. It’s a touching reminder of how creativity can help us honor our memories and heal in the process.

IOD Products Needed:

Other Supplies:

  • Blue Chalk-Type Paint*
  • Sponge or sandpaper for distressing
  • Spray Matte Lacquer

*we used a chalk-type paint in this tutorial, but there are many brands and types of paint, talk to your stockist to learn which one is right for you!

Step-by-Step Guide

STEP ONE: THE PREPARATION

Every good project starts with a little prep work! Jonathon began by giving the box some much-needed TLC. He removed the red felt from the base and took out the central divider. A bit of wood glue here, a couple of nails there, and before long, this box was ready for its beautiful new chapter.

STEP TWO: CHOOSE THE PAINT & COMPOSITION

Jonathon chose a rich duck egg blue chalk paint to play beautifully against the warm reds and oranges in the La Folie Paint Inlay. After a couple of even coats on the exterior, the box was primed for the paint inlay.

STEP THREE: APPLYING IOD PAINT INLAYS

Some of these La Folie Paint Inlays were on their second application, but they still had plenty of life left to bring this project together beautifully. Jonathon carefully played with the trims and corners until the composition felt just right.

After brushing on a fresh coat of chalk paint, he gave the back of each inlay a light spritz to soften and stretch the paper; this little step makes placement so much easier. Using his fingers and a damp sponge, he gently pressed everything into place, smoothing out any bubbles or wrinkles.

After about an hour and a half of dry time, it was time for the big reveal. This always comes with a mix of excitement and nerves! But the moment that paper lifted, the patterns came through beautifully. 💕

STEP FOUR: ADD A LITTLE DISTRESSING

Once the paint was fully dry, it was time to add a little more character. Using a damp sponge, Jonathon gently revealed some of the wood beneath; just enough to let that natural beauty peek through. For softer, more refined wear, a fine sanding pad works like a charm.

STEP FIVE: FINISH WITH A MATTE LACQUER

To finish it off, Jonathon gave the piece a few light coats of matte spray lacquer. It’s the perfect final touch to seal in all that beauty for years to come. ❤️
