We’re firm believers that even the smallest touches can make your table feel extra special. Just look at how all the darling projects from our Easter tablescape series come together to make this setting feel totally adorable and sophisticated! It makes us so giddy to gather around the table with our loved ones, share good food, and even better company.

Today, we’re giving thrifted wood chargers a soft, vintage refresh with the lovely Trimmings 4 mould. The result is a gorgeous floral charger that effortlessly blends with various styles. 🥰

This project is beginner-friendly and can be made with whatever chargers you can get your hands on: resale shop finds, hand-me-downs, or leftovers from previous holidays. Grab your Trimmings 4 mould (or your favorite mould from our Trimmings series), air dry clay, and a few paint colors that make your heart flutter, and let’s create something lovely together.

IOD Products Needed:

Other Supplies:

  • Wood Chargers (we found these at the thrift store)
  • Thick and Quick Glue
  • Chalk-type paint

*we used a chalk-type paint in this tutorial, but there are many brands and types of paint. Talk to your stockist to learn which one is right for you!

Step-by-Step Guide

STEP ONE: CLEAN YOUR CHARGERS

We snagged these wood chargers at our local resale shop, so use whatever treasure you can find. Just give them a good wipe-down, and you’re ready to go!

STEP TWO: CAST AND APPLY YOUR MOULD

We grabbed our Trimmings 4 mould and dusted a nice, even layer of cornstarch over the wide floral trim. Be sure to tap out the excess before you start with your clay. And when you’re making your castings, don’t be shy! A generous fill helps keep the trim in one piece and cuts down on cracking. Use the micro rim to clean up any overflow.

Our chargers were 14" in diameter, and it took about 4½ castings to go all the way around. Because of the curve, you might not get a perfect edge-to-edge fit, and that’s totally okay! Just work slowly, gently curving and gluing the casting into place as you go. Before adding your next section, hold it in place to see how it fits, then snip off any excess foliage or florals. Once it’s dry and painted, it all comes together beautifully.

STEP THREE: CLEAN UP EXCESS CLAY

Once all your castings are in place, grab a tool with a flat edge to tidy things up. A palette knife would work beautifully here, but we used our transfer applicator! Use it to gently scrape away any excess clay along the outer edge of the charger. This helps create a nice, smooth edge that won’t easily chip. A clean edge adds that extra bit of durability.

STEP FOUR: BACKFILL ANY CRACKS IN YOUR CLAY

Now, we let ours dry fully before painting. One part of the process we don’t talk about enough? Backfilling!

Clay naturally shrinks as it dries, which can give you that beautiful vintage look, but sometimes the cracks are a little more than you bargained for. Don’t worry—it’s totally normal!

If you spot any gaps or shrinkage, grab a bit of clay and gently press it into the cracks. Use your fingers, a popsicle stick, or even a clay tool to smooth it into all those yummy details. Once everything’s filled in, you’re ready to paint!

STEP FIVE: PAINT YOUR CHARGERS

We went with a soft, creamy white for this one—such a timeless look! An artist brush helped us get into all those beautiful nooks and crannies. The wood needed a couple of coats for full coverage, so just be sure to let each layer dry completely before moving on.

STEP SIX: SHOW OFF THOSE DETAILS

To finish things off, we added just a hint of color to highlight the details in our castings. We went with a soft, dusty rose chalk paint and used a dry brush technique with just the tiniest bit of paint on the brush! Hold your brush horizontally and gently sweep it across the high points. This brings out the petals and leaves so beautifully without overpowering them. Let it dry completely, seal it up, and you’re done! ❤️
