Hey, boring dresser…your days are numbered! 😉

IOD Artisan Vonnie Smith upcycled a tired dresser with layers on layers, the prettiest texture, and a vintage finish we never get tired of.

In today’s tutorial, Vonnie is using IOD Stamps and Transfers from the 2026 Spring Collection—the Lace Stamp, Emblems Stamp, and the By Any Other Name Transfer—to build a look that feels collected and beautifully distinct. She starts with pale blue chalk-style paint, then stamps the Lace Stamp in stone gray ink using a thin mount to keep everything aligned.

She cuts out her transfer elements first, sorts them by size and design, then uses painter’s tape to temporarily “stage” everything right on the piece. That way, she can shuffle, layer, and fine-tune the layout until it feels just right.

From there, she layers overlapping florals, stamped Emblems, and sweet little butterflies. She even plays around with framing on the side panels, swapping ideas as she goes and ultimately landing on a design that ties everything together.

This one is full of techniques you’ll want in your repertoire. Grab your IOD goodies from your local stockist! If you’re not sure where to find one, click here to use our store locator.

Step by Step Guide: Vonnie’s Prepping Trick for Layering IOD Transfers on Furniture

STEP ONE: PREP YOUR FURNITURE PIECE

Vonnie began by sanding the top of her dresser and staining it with a dark wax. Remove all the drawers and clean them thoroughly. This is your canvas, so make sure you prep it well to ensure a smooth painting process.

STEP TWO: PRIME AND PAINT

Apply a water-based primer on the entire surface of your furniture piece, followed by two coats of pale blue chalk-type paint. Vonnie applies her chalk-type paint in many directions because she’s after a textured surface to achieve a vintage finish. She uses sandpaper to scuff the edges and reveal a bit of the white primer paint underneath.

STEP THREE: STAMPING YOUR PIECE

Vonnie uses the new Lace Stamp on an IOD Thin Mount with Stone Grey Decor Ink to dress up the drawers and edges of her dresser. She lines the stamp up with the grid marks on the Thin Mount, then applies even pressure as she works her way around. Remember, those tiny imperfections are part of the charm and help the whole piece feel collected and vintage.

STEP FOUR: ARRANGE & LAYER IOD TRANSFERS

Vonnie starts by cutting out the By Any Other Name elements one by one, sorting them by size and detail, then mapping out the layout with little bits of painter’s tape before she commits. Once everything feels balanced, she applies the transfers using the included applicator.

STEP FIVE: ADD A FEW FINAL TOUCHES

Vonnie uses the crests from Emblems to dress up the side panels, placing them symmetrically. Then she layers bits from By Any Other Name right over the stamped impressions for extra detail. To finish the panels, she uses Turmeric Decor Ink and the smallest Lace detail from the Lace Stamp, creating a soft little frame around the entire design.

STEP SIX: SEAL YOUR PROJECT

Vonnie seals everything with clear wax, then adds a touch of dark wax to bring out the dimension. It’s the finishing touch that pulls the whole piece together.

And voila! A vintage furniture piece is completely salvaged into a scrumptious work of art. The Lace Stamp and By Any Other Name Transfer pair beautifully together in this one, don’t you think? Happy creating!
