The story behind the IOD Kindest Regards Stamp
The”Kindest Regards” letter was written in November of 1863 by Alfred H. Love, of Philadelphia, PA .
Mr. Love was a dedicated Pacifist and an abolitionist. Additionally, he advocated for the land rights of Native Americans and was a proponent of women’s suffrage. To advance those causes, he founded the Universal Peace Union (UPU).
The mission of the UPU was to “Remove the causes and abolish the custom of war, establish and live the principles of peace.” To advance the organization’s work, Mr. Love began hosting lectures featuring prominent speakers of the day to discuss all of these issues.
It was through his work at the UPU that he met his dear friend and the recipient of the “Kindest Regards” letter, the famous journalist, abolitionist, and suffrage activist, Wm Lloyd Garrison.
Specifically, in the “Kindest Regards” letter, Mr. Love wrote to let Mr. Garrison know that another prominent abolitionist, James Miller M’Kim, would be joining them as a speaker at an upcoming UPU event.
He informs his friend that he’s continuing to work on the event planning and will confirm once they secure a hall to hold the lecture.
Finally, he invites his friend to bring his family on the visit and to stay with Love’s family in their home.
He writes, “Meanwhile be assured of the pleasure it will afford us to have thee or any of thy family with us, if only for the short time thee proposed. We wish it could be longer.”
He closes the letter, “With the kindest regards, my friend.”
